Heart disease is a special concern for women because they do not always have the same symptoms as men. Women’s hormonal changes may affect heart disease risk. Estrogen’s presence in higher amounts in younger women is believed to maintain a lower heart risk for them. However, both hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and birth control pills and may increase women’s heart risk.
