Although scientists are not sure why diabetes occurs, many factors influence the chance of developing the condition. The chance of developing type 2 diabetes, by far the most common, is influenced by obesity, genetics, race and ethnicity, age, medical history, smoking, diet, alcohol use and stress. The risks for type 1 diabetes are not as well understood.
